France turned its back on the far-right views of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the National Front leader, as the electorate turned out in force to deliver a crushing victory to incumbent Jaques Chirac in the second round of the presidential elections. Mr Chirac's second term as France's head of state was sealed after electors gave him close to 82 per cent of the vote. Mr Chirac said he "saluted France" for his victory.
