..that for Israel to continue the occupation is to place themselves in the same jeopardy as the French in Algeria. The connection between the two is tenuous. The French were colonialists in the classic sense--not so the Israelis. The Algerian rebels had competent leadership. Ben Bella and Arafat (and even Boumedienne) cannot be compared. The Algerians had an honest to goodness army--it was in Morocco, separated from Algeria by imposing physical barriers, but neverthless it was an army. The French saw little of the war in France; not so the Israelis. The present conflict is internatonalized and has foreign policy implications for a number of nations other than the combatants--not so in Algeria. C2@comparisonsareodious.com
