Re <<MRVC also has 2/3 of shareholders equity tied up in goodwill in (Mostly) photonics subsidiaries & hasn't written down any substantial amount.>>

I am not talking about equity, I am talking cash. MRVC has much higher cash/cap ratio. You are right about the good will write down which is no secret.

Re <<I find it peculiar that MRVC's investments there were so much better than those companies.>>

MRVC spun out (Luminent)LMNE, a passive and active fiber optic part provider, toward the end of the bubble. Made good cash, then it bought it back few months ago at substantial discount. Probably one of the best trades in corporate America's history. All the good will tied up with that is legit.

Not saying it time to jump in MRVC with both feet, not yet. Probably toward the end of the summer.

What do you think about PRGN? Huge risk and huge rewards. I think the Enron and Anderson names has this stock unduly down. But the new auditors could have a bomb shell waiting. Everyone is so scared and heads are rolling. Time to be greedy IMO.
