April 23.

Today at 3:45 AM I got that phone call we all dread.

Dad had not answered his wake up phone calls and his Luncheonette was still closed. The police and fireman helped me break into his home and we found him dead on the floor.

His heart had stopped. And My heart hurts!

Sometimes I bought him Flowers on Mothers and Fathers Day. He was my father, and mother, and my best friend too.

For the last 20 years of my life I saw him and mooched a meal almost every day. Life will never be the same.

I have had so many strangers come up to me today . They say my Dad will be missed so much. Some told me how he had fed them when they were down on their luck. Or loaned them money. I feel Reading has lost a real friend.

I found out today only last week he got a Medal from France for WW2, and I was told there was a Bronze Star coming too. He never told me. Never talked about the War.

But life had worn him down. Life is not fair. And he hardly smiled anymore. He was tired. So tired. And I will miss him so. And I pray to GOD eventually I will forget his sadness. Forget his pain. And only remember the joy he brought to the world for 76 years.

And see the smile in my minds eye he had when I would walk into his Luncheonette. He called me his Ace to his friends. Or Flash. But I never heard him say it.

He called me son.

I am proud to say he called me son.
