I agree. I hear now always that the upswing of the market has to be confiremed by higher earnings. I think this is right but it is often overlooked that after all the lay-offs which the recession caused, has made the firms not only leaner but also more competitiv. And then there are the inventories which have been worked down and will have to be built up again whenever demand increases. And one fact will increase earnings while the other will cause higher sales and both will be helpful for the stock market. And once this starts to become clear those firms will profit most that have resisted the big downturn, because investors have become cautious. Fred
