Report moots downward revision of WLL rentals

PTI [ MONDAY, MAY 06, 2002 2:41:27 PM ]

NEW DELHI: Even as the cellular operators are all set to approach the Supreme Court on Tuesday on the limited mobility issue, a report by Centre for Market Research and Social Development has said there is "urgent need" to revise the monthly rentals downwards for WLL services to match input costs.
"The issue to be raised here is whether such a higher rental (as compared to fixed line rentals or cellular service rentals) would find favour with low end users. Our analysis suggests that under various scenarios, the fixed monthly rental ranges from Rs 130-135 per month to Rs 165-175 per month," the report- Telephony through WLL(M)-- released on Monday -- said.
"The difference between this figure and the current monthly rental figures is so huge that there is an urgent need to take ground realities into account and revise the monthly rental downwards to match input costs."
Currently, rental for limited mobility services has been fixed at the floor price of Rs 450 and the ceiling price of Rs 550 whereas the fixed line rentals attract a minimum of Rs 450 per two months and fullfledged cellular service Rs 399 per month.
Commenting on pricing recommendations for WLL, the report said that capital investments varied widely with usage in the case of WLL (mobility) services and hence there was a strong case for flexibility in charging rentals, and pointed out that service providers may offer rentals to subscribers based on their usage pattern.
