Here's a quote from a WSJ article (6 May 2002, B5) about Moody's downgrading of Vivendi's debt and its condemnation of Vizzavi's performance: "Aside from its borrowing implications, the Moody's announcement added to the discredit surrounding Mr. Messier's strategy. In its statement, the rating agency criticized Vizzavi, the wireless Web portal co-owned by Vivendi and Britain's Vodagone PLC, as "having failed to live up to expectations. When it was launched two years ago, Vizzavi was at the center of Mr. Messier's ambitious vision of someday delivering movies and music to consumers on demand via cellphones. But the technology enabling high-speed Web surfing and downloading from mobile devices remains in its infancy, making Vizzavi little else than a big cash drain. The venture had a loss of 386 million euros last year, more than what Vivendi's Hollywood studio, Universal, earned in one of its best years to date at the box office. Vivendi is beginning to rethink its commitment to Vizzavi, according to people familiar with the situation."
