<<ASND being in the AWRE camp, of course, this can certainly be read as a positive for Aware. With ALA working on it's own xDSL solutions (& rumours of licensing deals for ANSI & ETSI compliance) if I were AWRE I might be looking over my shoulder. Any way you slice it though, there is no good news for AMTX here.>>

respectfully disagree. i see no AWRE content in this announcement. ALA is explicitly called out as the ADSL provider:

Xu Zhi Qun, deputy general manager of Shanghai Bell, said, "Alcatel's DMT-based ADSL has been endorsed by many carriers world wide. Its standards-based architecture has proven to be flexible. In particular, we liked the ATM interface, and the fact that it is proven."

Ascend is being tapped for its more tradtional product line offerings.

The "good news" for AMTX? well, it's a win for standards-based DMT, indicating again that ALA will be signing a licensing agreement with AMTX and that royalties will accrue to AMTX.
