Nextel Communications Inc., Global Crossing Ltd. and Level 3 Communications Inc. were among companies taking out high-yield loans last year, helping push (high yield) lending to $391 billion from $329 billion in 1998, according to Securities Data Corp. Companies borrowed $1.05 trillion in 1999 up from $1.04 trillion in 1998 and just shy of 1997’s record $1.1 trillion.”
