Gotta disagree.
HWP was choking without CPQ, and CPQ was turning things around in a tough environment. CPQ didn't need HWP, rather than the reverse. CPQ has several lines that it beats HWP in, and HWP needed those lines to make a more coherent strategy. The alternative was to sell off some pieces (as WW wanted) and focus on a few profitable (but dying) product lines.
CPQ probably needed to do a bit of that, too...but not nearly as much.
