that political risk conversation again:

what are people's views about russia? firebird like it, but i keep remembering dukat. more recently, SOCO international pulled out, and their CEO told the papers, "doing business in russia is for the russians".

i've come across a few big russian gold plays that seem way underpriced to me, but find it hard to evaluate the country risk. my sense, tho, is that russia per se is more risky than the Stans (vide elizabeth's remarks above).

or does it just come down to the individual combination of luck, naus and ruthlessness that make up any particular deal?

any other takes on this?
