Just finished listening to the Sprint PCS and the Verizon presentations.....

Simply put, I believe that Sprint PCS understands wireless data far better than Verizon. We still need more details from PCS on their services/pricing but without a doubt their presentation leads me to believe that they are concentrating on the right things.

Random highlights.....

Verizon

- April gross adds were "outstanding". They were higher than last year (is that their definition of outstanding?).

- They originally introduced a 1x pricing scheme that used the customer's bundle of minutes. Businesses indicated that they wanted to be billed by the MB so they introduced that scheme a couple of weeks ago.

- They have 10,000 1x subs at the end of April. This was described as being after one month of service....maybe they are measuring it from when they launched per MB pricing. They are seeing "rapid" take-up in May. Clearly, PCS has cost themselves very little by waiting to launch 1x.

- Customers are experiencing regular download speeds of 80Kbps.

- At one point during the presentation high-speed data using a laptop was described as the killer-app. I couldnt disagree more. It will be a nice way to get business customers but applications are what is going to drive 1x sales.

- They received twice as many BREW customers as they expected during the trial. The most popular application was Tiger Woods golf. They seemed surprised by this revelation.

- They consider flat-rate pricing absolutely unsustainable. They had a trial in a market in the South which they discontinued.

- The one area that I believe that Verizon is really going to push is SMS. They were averaging something like 1 million SMS messages a month before they announced interoperability about a month ago. The first day after that they had 1 million messages sent....and they are now upto 2 million a day. This is off a base of somewhere between 3-5 million two-way SMS capable handsets.

Sprint PCS

- They will only continue selling IS-95A handsets as long as inventories last. It sounds like they have ordered their last non 1x handset....or that this is going to happen very soon.

- They are still planning on having a PTT service up and running during the second half of the year. No firm details but they seem pretty confident in this date.

- They are implementing BOBO (Billing on Behalf of Others)....this is the BREW/i-mode model of billing.

- The marketing launch for 1x is going to be based on the applications that are available not on the speed.

- They are expecting capex to drop by hundreds of millions next year.

Perhaps my dissafaction with Verizon simply rests on their lack of emphasis on applications. Sprint PCS has been talking about the importance of creating new ways of using wireless handsets for years. The fact that Verizon had to change their 1x pricing scheme within 1 month of launch tells me that they arent doing nearly enough market research.

Perhaps BREW will end up saving them.....
