PH:

My two sons are air traffic controllers, and I do my own share of flying, so perhaps I have a cavalier perspective on aircraft accidents. Put in a nutshell, I think that the level of safety we enjoy when travelling by air is incredible. There are thousands of planes up there at any given moment in time, 24/7, yet the accidents are extremely rare.... a handful per annum (in a "bad" year) at the commercial level and less in a typical year. Obviously it makes for a bad hair day if you happen to be a passenger when an accident occurs, but driving is a heck of a lot more dangerous and we never think twice about jumping into the old auto. I know I feel safer up there than when driving on the 401 (especially when I am in my own plane and not one of the "sardines" packed into a 777).

I also think that we are all probably much more sensitive to aircraft accident reporting since 9/11

Best, Earlie
