I can't believe anyone would assume a MSFT DB is superior

I just got a call yesterday from a client who we built a multi-user database system for 8 years ago. It supports a small number of users (<10) and only a few thousand transactions per year. We built it using MS Access because the client didn't feel the need to spend money licensing a database when "we have Access on all of our machines already".

I'm meeting with them on Friday to discuss rewriting the system, from scratch, and using (their words, not mine) "a real database". The person who called me was not there when the initial decision was made to use Access and could not believe that his employer based the decision on avoiding additional licensing fees.

But I think that analysts like to pile on

I didn't see the CIBC report, but I do know the analyst, Melissa Eisenstat, who follows Oracle. She used to sell software and actually does understand the industry from firsthand experience. Melissa and Charles Phillips at MSDW are two analysts who have been involved with the New York Oracle Users Group (and other users groups) for many years and do make an effort to see what is happening "in the trenches". The NYOUG meets 4-5 times a year in Manhattan. Our president is regularly quoted in the trade press. We're not exactly shy with our opinions, good and bad. You might think that some of the other NY-based analysts might consider the group to be a useful resource for getting reality checks on the industry's PR machine. Their firms are not exactly going to be generating a whole lot of investment banking revenue from Oracle. Maybe some insightful analysis would help out their retail brokerage business...
