I'm not really sure what makes the hummers migrate back into an area. I know that they do require insects too and our barn swallows showed up here a week ago, which means that the insect populations are already going up (which they are). I would think that it would be insect populations more than flowers that would be the determining factor in whether or not the hummers are ready to return to an area for the summer.
