Nitrogen is not toxic,
I nearly suffocated in a room filled with nitrogen once. It's very hard to detect (since it is the major component of air anyway) and there is no odor or anything, just a rapid dizziness followed by unconsciousness as your body becomes depleated of oxygen.

The particular circumstance was in a ultra clean room where the particular piece of equipment was powered by pneumatic actuators which used N2 instead of compressed air. For good reason people are only supposed to attend these areas in pairs.
