STOCK ALERT - TSMC, UMC higher on Wall St rally -- AFX - Asia, 5/9/2002 e-insite.net Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd and United Microelectronics Corp shares were higher in early trade, with sentiment bolstered by Wall Street's strong showing overnight and particularly by gains in the Philadelphia semiconductor index, dealers said. At 9.10 am, TSMC was up 4.00 twd 87.00 on volume of 5.74 mln shares and UMC was up 1.80 at 51.50 on 6.89 mln shares. Sharp gains in their ADRs overnight also helped offset foreign investors' selloff in the two companies common shares here and lingering concerns over the drought affecting the island.
