Marc,

I was listening to the Zoom cc to get some insight into 56k deployment and it raised a simple question I thought you could help with. The statement was made that Ascend had 2.2mm digital central ports at the eof 96 and USR had only 200-300K. It was then concluded that USR had its easy x2 upgrades done already while Ascend's upgrading of their customer base would be quite fast. Very interesting.

The CEO provided an example of a Boston ISP w/ 30k subscribers that was 100% USR analog. He stated that an upgrade to x2 would cost the ISP $350/port (I assume this included digital upgrades and equip cost).

I guess I understand that the conclusion on upgrades is based on the fact that analog central ports will not support 56k. My questions are as follows:
- Are the majority of USR's central ports at AOL, MCI, ATT are analog? This seems a bit out of whack since these are pretty big dogs.
- Does a digital central port imply ISDN?

The CEO also stated that in a conversation with Ascend mgt prior to the call, Ascend stated that it is shipping 56k port "at a very significant rate" and that 56k had been deployed in 280 ports in the U.S. Ascend also stated that it expects to ship over 1mm port by eof summer.

Needless to say, this was a very insightful cc.

Regards,
Bobo
