I'm tending to agree with you, to some extent. What I can find about his policies other than on immigration appears hard RW by European standards, but not extremely so, even for Holland which is generally very centrist and consensus-driven. It's certainly libertarian and free-market oriented, but not extreme. The only other controversial policy was voucher-based education, but this is a common centre-right theme across the West anyhow.

I think it's the anti-immigrant stance, indelibly associated with the European RWE platform, which has really branded him. That and the happenstance of Le Pen's more conventional extreme RW hitting the headlines only a little earlier, news programmes love a new 'trend' be it baby hunger or the hard RW.
