I'm considering a new computer--the old one won't load Windows 2000 (BH6 V.1.0) which I need to run Visual Basic.Net and I'm also kinda curious what kind of performance I'd get with some of the new stuff, i.e., I'm going to try a dual HDD w/RAID setup, and a big bang for the buck Athlon XP1700 and 512MB of DDR memory.

Comments/suggestions welcome. A lot of the ideas I got from the ars-technica buying guide: arstechnica.com which helped me to quickly narrow my choices--since I trust these guys, it eliminates a lot of the compatibility and performance homework. Here's the list of parts and vendors:

Sheet #2 is the same system with dual Palomino MP processors and the Tyan motherboard. It's $400 extra bucks that I'm probably going to keep in my pocket for now. One of the reasons for this is the current MP system from AMD does not have strong memory thruput performance--in many memory-intensive applications the XP performs better. AMD has a new MP architecture in the pipeline that is supposed to greatly improve on this. This review helped a lot:

One nagging reservation is AMD's reputation for running hot, but it seems like the experts don't have a real issue with it.
