My answer would be that VideoServer can now provide and control the network interface which is part of any video conference. Don't think it will let them sell any more units although they can probably get additional revenue on each sale. Can't comment on the purchase price. If you prefer, I'll let Robert Castle, President/CEO of VideoServer answer (from their Press Release).

"We acquired Promptus' network access card business for several reasons. First, the network interface is a critical part of the conferencing environment and Promptus is a market leader in providing interfaces to the telephony network. This acquisition strengthens our ability to influence the direction and extend the uses of this important technology, particularly as we address new and emerging markets. We plan to use this technology extensively in products such as LAN/WAN gateways, which interconnect multimedia conferencing users on different networks, and in other collaborative tools. Second, Promptus has built an impressive OEM channel comprising influential players in telecommunications and networking; we share many of these customers in common and believe these customers will benefit from an integrated family of networking products. And lastly, with Promptus' partnerships and the strong development team and organization behind the technology, this acquisition provides VideoServer with additional opportunities in the broader networking market."
