T4, oil/gas exploration is subject to a winter freeze-up break... where ice roads need to be built to get heavy equipment on location. I can imagine that you keep hearing how big and how empty Canada is, but really, there's very little arable land up here (5% if that) ... its moose country and that means muskeg (and black flies). Then there spring break... companies need to wait for the big dry up to gain accessibility. You’ll notice by the Baker Hughes rig count the massive fluctuations between these two periods.

As for gold exploration ... it depends where and how advanced the project is - I believe some companies fly in by helicopter and drop off a geologist or two for preliminaries and they work from there. So obviously prospecting for gold along side the Trans-Canada highway (like Sultan Minerals) is much more desirable than prospecting in Nunavut (like Miramar) where there’s very little in basic infrastructure.
