Sun is probably looking at AMD's obvious inability to manufacture either .13 micron or SOI or flash (and not lose money) and is thinking to themselves "Can we really place our entire future in the hands of Jerry Sanders?"

The Mani-rated AMD thread is atwitter over McGee's rumors that Sun is about to embrace the Flopteron.

If Sun is astute, they'll look to AMD's actual ability to compete with Intel.

This rumor may relate to recent reports that Sun will not be committing as fully to Linux as once expected, that Solaris may get more emphasis for x86 boxes. Why? Because if Sun is using someone else's silicon AND using someone else's OS, where's that leave _them_, except as a low-margin white box maker.

They may be looking to make money the Microsoft way.

Which, if so, means they may well be planning on using the Flopteron AND ANY OTHER CHIPS COMPARABLE. Namely, the Intel version. Even the IA-64.

They need to be vendor-agnostic.
