Her earliest work...is written under Barrington Moore's influence, and thus more about the social surrounds of the state than the state.

But the whole point of States and Social Revolutions is to point out that the precondition for revolutions is state failure. That is, people interested in revolution should not focus on the colorful insurgents in the streets but rather the decrepit ancien regime whose deterioration has created the revolutionary crisis in the first place. So I see a strong continuity rather than a discontinuity there.

Agreed. Along with Huntington and Robert Putnam, has made powerful contributions to literatures in several different subfields--an extraordinary feat. Tough as nails, too--the personal stuff was probably behind the tenure controversy even more than the academic stuff. Her politics are a bit too left for my taste, but then you can't have everything.
