Last week's New Yorker had an article by a a journalist I consider to be the best on Latin American issues, Alma Guillermoprieto, concerning the deteriorating political situation in Colombia. The two armed groups, the paramilitary right wing AUC and FARC, the leftist guerrilas, have a huge contingent of armed fighters and apparently no financial problems.

Also reading Bowden's latest book, Killing Pablo Escobar, which is interesting as it gives a fairly good synopsis of recent Colombian political history.

As if the US did not have enough to worry about, it is quite possible that it is soon about to hit the fan in Colombia. With Hugo Chavez next door apparently supporting the FARC, the risks to important US interests are getting greater.

PS: If anyone has an interest in Latin American affairs, they should read everything Guillermoprieto has written.
