Takenaka to say Japan economy bottoming out -paper

sg.news.yahoo.com

TOKYO, May 12 (Reuters) - Japanese Economics Minister Heizo Takanaka is expected to announce that the economy is bottoming out and that the worst is past in a key meeting later this week, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper said on Sunday.

Sources close to Takenaka were quoted as saying that he is likely to say that the economy is over the worst phase and is entering a recovery phase at the Friday meeting, which will be held to compile the government's monthly economic report.

But he is also likely to warn that any recovery will "not be particularly strong" and that the government must press on with structural reforms for a full-fledged recovery.

Officials could not be reached for comment.

Takenaka said on Friday that upbeat economic data over the past month would be taken into account when the government pulls together the monthly economic report for May.
