Charles - I spent a fair amount of time on Solaris internals when I was doing driver development. Most of the database engines do not use the Solaris file system, and thus don't get into the buffering you discuss. The reason is that the file system has to make general decisions about what might happen next, whereas the database knows much more precisely. For example, a SQL query plan knows well in advance what the most likely index page request will be, and even attaches a statistical probability to future requirements. Under those circumstances, it is much more efficient for the database to do all of its own buffer and disk management.
