Hi rudedog: Can you explain what significant technology (both hardware and software) advancements have been made in the last 36 months regarding optimizing database performance? From your discussion, it appears a lot of the same issues were problems three or more years ago. Have the second generation OS platforms help resolve a lot of these issues or perhaps there are some new approaches in hardware design or bus configuration that help improve stability and performance?

What's your best guess on what the technologists are working on in the lab that may leapfrog the current state of the art?

<edit> I am thinking of some of the recent work that both Oracle and SUNW has been doing with distributed processing. This approach IMO will not only help overall performance but can significantly improve the scalability of the enterprise system.
