The "de-nationalization" of the railways has been a disaster unfortunately. With some imagination and co operation it could have gone differently.

The problems started with the appointment of the first Railtrack chairman Sir Robert Horton. This was the guy who single handedly nearly destroyed British Petroleum using consultants to "modernize" it. How do these incompetents get picked? Is it the the funny handshake society or what?? Fortunately BP has since recovered. A small group of investors and employees put a stop to the nonsense.

It was felt that the powerful railway unions first needed bashing. Sir Horton first got rid of a large percentage of the rail maintenance crews. The first years showed good profits.

Here is an earlier story...

He went after several disasters, but his legacy continues. We need less of the corporate group think imho.

He has a lot of innocent blood on his hands.

No doubt some union leaders need to be strung up with him.

I wonder how many "near misses" there has been??? Thousands, or tens of thousands probably.
