Report: Terrorists Plan July 4 Attack
Government Taking Threats Seriously

POSTED: 11:10 a.m. EDT May 13, 2002

WASHINGTON -- Intelligence officials are trying to determine if the latest terror threats against the United States are credible.

A government source says officials last week had gotten information that terrorists plan to strike a U.S. nuclear plant on the July 4 holiday.

The source says early findings indicate the information isn't credible enough to act upon -- but the government is taking it seriously.

The source says the information suggests Islamic militants are planning to attack the Three Mile Island nuclear site in Pennsylvania or a nuclear plant in the Northeast.

The Washington Times first reported the story.

The source says the threat is one of many filtering through U.S. intelligence, and doesn't warrant any kind of formal warning to the public.
