I know several people with eMachines boxes. Several of them were formerly HP or CPQ owners, who decided after their previous experiences that "they're all crap, so I'll buy the cheap one."

I've looked inside the eMachines boxes and the components are not really much differnt from the Pavilions and Presarios. They are all defined by cost, and all use the cheapest practical components. eMachines is a lot less "styled", but many people don't care.

If Pavilion service hasn't improved significantly since I worked there, then it is still a big negative for the HP brand name.
