You know, I agree with the concept that this is a commodity, so you should go for the cheap one. But I still believe branding plays a role.

Most people DON'T know that the innards are the same, and won't purchase something like that. I've replayed my discussions with my wife on this, and other boards, about our last purchase. For some reason, Dell resonated with her. Don't ask me why. So, that's what we got.
Meanwhile, I only see Compaqs all over my friends homes. My brother has purchased 3 computers in the last 8 years. All CPQ.
Personally, I've heard great things about HP computers. I've heard bad things, too, but mostly from people on these boards.

Branding is, was and always will be important. Generic stuff never amounts to a significant portion of sales. My supermarket eliminated the generic aisle. The margins were too slim and sales too low. If you look on a can of generic peanuts, its all canned by the same company that does Planters.....but Planters still "tastes better".
