SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Two boys took a tractor on a joyride, smashing 12 cars in a school lot and causing an estimated $200,000 damage, authorities said. The boys, about 11 and 13, were caught Sunday as they tried to run from school police, said Bill Clayton, environmental safety officer with San Bernardino City Unified School District.
Clayton said the youngsters used a spare key they found hidden on the tractor to start up the vehicle, then rammed it into district-owned cars at a center where school food was prepared, and also punched a hole in a portable classroom.
"They were probably bored and looking for something to do, got carried away and it escalated from there," Clayton said.
The boy's identities were not immediately released. One was taken to juvenile hall, Clayton said. He did not have details on what happened to the other boy.
