Pursuing this line of thinking.... Barrick is really diversified into two asset classes... gold and bonds. According to modern investment thinking diversification of asset classes is less risky.

Suppose that Barrick has 50% of its reserves "hedged". Doesn't that imply that 50% of its reserves will have the investment return of a portfolio of bonds and only the other half the investment return of gold?

Do you agree with this analogy ? To my mind, that's not a bad thing. Personally I would rather have half my "reserves" invested in bonds than 100% invested in gold. Wouldn't you ?

Russett, instead of reading what Barrick preaches about the "premium price it gets for gold", try thinking for yourself. You may come to incorrect conclusions, just as I might have, but it beats swallowing a potted line whether handed out by Barrick or Gata.
