Kemble,

Larson's words really read like this...We know we unseated Dell's top spot in the PC market by combining the two companies, and we'll try really really hard to keep the number one spot. We'll be really really aggressive, BUT, if we fail yet again at holding down DELL, we'll just come out and say that number one isn't important...it's earnings and revenue that matters. Then the "new" Fiorina will go on a campaign to tell the world DELL is number one at the expense of margins and revenue. Then two days later they'll outline yet another poorly planned strategy to cut costs so they can be aggressive in the PC market.

""That said, Larson also emphasized that HP, which has set strict targets for revenue and earnings in the next few years as a result of its purchase of Compaq, won't be able to turn its back on profits.""

"Marketshare is a very important measure of our success in the marketplace, however profitability and earnings per share is an even more important measure of our success," Larson said.
