Dear NRDC BioGems Defender,

Because you took action online to help save Costa Rica's spectacular
Talamanca coast from off-shore oil drilling, I wanted you to be among
the first to hear the exciting news of our victory in this year-long
BioGems campaign. Last week, one day before a new presidential
administration took office, outgoing environment minister Elizabeth
Odio rejected an eleventh-hour appeal from U.S.-based Harken Energy to
approve its proposed drilling project, stating the plan would harm
fragile coral reef systems and other marine areas.

The next day, in his inauguration speech, new Costa Rican president
Abel Pacheco declared a new era of "Peace with the Environment" and
specifically rejected oil drilling and mining as the basis for the
country's future.

You and other BioGems Defenders who sent more than 27,000 messages to
save this endangered marine habitat played a central role in
persuading the Costa Rican government to spare Talamanca's manatees,
rare Tucuxi dolphins and endangered leatherback, hawksbill and green
sea turtles from the ravages of oil drilling. Please accept
heartiest congratulations as well as heartfelt thanks from everyone
here at NRDC -- we really achieved this victory *together.*

Look for more about this wonderful victory in your next online issue
of "BioGems News." In the meantime, thank you again for continuing to
prove that concerned citizens have the power to save our planet's most
endangered wild places.

Sincerely,

Ari Hershowitz
NRDC Latin American BioGems Initiative
