Thanks for the James suggestions. I did try Daisy Miller in HS and didn't enjoy it, but will try the others you suggest--I'm going to be semi-retiring shortly, if plans go well, and expect to have a lot more time to start working through a to-read pile that's been accumulating for at least twenty years!

I love Hardy -- when I started my first job that gave me any sort of disposable income one of my first tasks was to purchase, through an English bookseller, the complete set of Hardy in the Macmillan pocket (hardbound but small size) editions. He's spotty, some are better than others, but I've enjoyed him immensely over the years.

Another book I read in HS, hated then, but went back to and loved, is Silas Marner. I think we all had to read it in 9th grade, back in my era, but that was really too soon, I think. Anyhow, I assume you know it, but if not, do check it out. Short, but quite enjoyable.
