Japan's 3G Woes Trickle To Handset Makers
BY KRISTY BASSUENER
MAY 14, 2002

Launch delays and technical glitches plaguing Japan's third-generation service
launches have not only hampered new subscribers to the advanced services, but
they've also affected handset sales as well. The Japan Electronics and
Information Technologies Industries Association reveals a report that March
mobile phone shipments in the country shrank nearly 50 percent to 3.12 million
phones compared with the same month in 2001. The JEITA says in its report that
demand for 3G has not been strong enough to boost replacement handset sales
and the overall mobile market.

At the end of March, NTT DoCoMo -- Japan's first carrier to offer 3G with its FOMA
service -- revealed it added 89,400 users for the 3G service. The carrier's goal
had been to reach 150,000 in its first six months of service. However, competitor
KDDI reported having 334,000 3G phone sales at the end of April, the first
month it began offering the service.
