That depends on what peoples' agendas are.

We have passed the point where anybody's agenda other than mine is to solve the problem and get everybody what they want. There has been a win-win proposal on the table for some time, but it has been soundly dismissed.

So since solving the problem isn't the goal, you have to wonder what is driving the, as you so succinctly put it, the mob.

I think you said you were retired. But if you knew a sociology graduate student in your old haunts who was interested in a thesis topic, they could hardly do better than study the history, emotions, dynamics, and stated and unstated goals of this issue. There's at least one complete PhD thesis here!
