FC Comes Full Circle:

I have been reading IEEE Communications Magazine for the past five years looking for any signs of FC becoming part of the broader long haul infrastructure. Until now, the storage on the network was usually depicted as a tiny hockey puck like figure - with no mention of FC. That all changed today in the May 2002 issue.

This issue has a special series of articles called "Generic Framing Procedure and Data over SONET/SDH and OTN". This protocol is a traffic protocol with QoS that has several transport modes within the same channel. One of these modes (Transparent Mapped GFP) is intended for long haul SAN (FC, FICON, ESCON) traffic. The article contains a lot of technical details about bandwidth with FC, ESCON, and GE. Looks like there will be support out to 10G FC.

Even if your eyes glaze over about the technical details, it is good to see FC included in articles about SONET/SDH, GE and ATM. Here is a link to the TOC. The lead article by Armstrong, et al is available. I think you have to be a member/subscriber for the rest:
