although the book is sub- literary, the story is so good, one misses various details contained in the narration.......

That was my impression of the book as well. When I first read it, within the first 20 pages I was thinking "Oh no." But you quickly get immersed in the story and miss some of the more "pulpishness" of Puzo's writing. It's a rich story. The movies make the story to be Michael's story. I read it to be primarily Vito's story, how a simple man does what is necessary in order to do good for his family (ala The Speech at the bank). Kristel reads it (interestingly) to be Tom's story. In her interpretation, Tom was the favorite son who couldn't truly be a son. There are lots of ways of approaching the book.
