Raymond,

IMHO One way or another, greater and greater amounts of electric power is going to be employed by the cars of the future; from the proposed 42V standard, to hybrid-electric vehicles, to fuel cells (electric), electric power is going to be used in a number of functions previously not used in automobiles.

From a Ford Website on the next generation electrical power system:"Future emission, fuel economy, comfort, convenience, and safety features require a higher voltage than in the past. The requirements will evolve, with advances in electronic automatic climate control, entertainment systems, antilock brakes, and traction-control systems. Applications of electronics in automobiles can already be found in ignition systems, alternator regulators, climate-control devices, and most recently, in electrically-assisted steering systems. New communication mechanisms will also increase electrical usage in automotive systems."

In the automotive section of their website is this:"Power electronics continue to change automotive designs. As reliable electronic motors replace belts and hydraulic systems and automotive electronic systems are moving to 42V, International Rectifier offers the leading edge automotive power management solutions for everything from creature comforts to the power train."
