Wouldn't the average future price have a relationship with how much the money supply has increased since that period you mentioned? Gold is after all an asset that is denominated in US dollars and if there are many more dollars then during the 1990-1996 period the number of dollars that it will take to buy an ounce of gold will shift upwards. This is the long range effect that the US dollar gold price has shown since gold and US dollars started being measured against each other.
