NEC<6701.T>, HP<HPQ.N> plan computer system tie-up TOKYO, May 15 (Reuters) - NEC Corp, Japan's largest PC maker, said on Wednesday it would cooperate with Hewlett-Packard Co in developing so-called mission-critical computer systems, such as banking systems, that cannot afford to fail. An NEC spokesman said further details would be released at a news conference in Tokyo at 11:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) to be attended by NEC Solutions Company vice president Toshiro Kawamura and, via video conference, by HP executive vice president Ann Livermore. NEC, also Japan's second-largest chipmaker and a major manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, posted heavy losses in the business year to March 31 due largely to the deep info-tech slump. The sprawling high-tech conglomerate has responded in part by sharpening its focus on the more stable computer services and software sector and has positioned mission-critical computer systems as a centrepiece of that strategy. In Wednesday morning trade NEC's shares were up 1.89 percent at 917 yen, in line with a 1.71 percent gain in the benchmark Nikkei average <.N225>.
