ATLANTA, May 13, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. (NYSE:BJ), a leading warehouse retailer in the eastern United States, today announced plans to equip its seven Connecticut stores with the latest electronic shelf label (ESL) technology from NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR).
ESLs are digital tags that can be attached to store shelves or other fixtures, where they display pricing and other information in large, clear characters. The NCR RealPrice(TM) wireless ESL solution uses the same computer file as the store's point-of-sale system, so when purchases are scanned at checkout, the price always matches the price in the aisle.
"The reaction of our customers to ESLs has been exceptionally positive," said Michael Wedge, executive vice president of Store Operations for BJ's. "Members appreciate knowing prices are consistent from shelf edge to checkout, and find the digital labels easy-to-read. Being able to change prices quickly and easily also helps us improve operational efficiency and maintain our everyday low prices."
BJ's was among the first retailers in the world to install NCR's wireless ESLs. The company decided to install the latest generation NCR RealPrice solution -- which offers increased functionality and a 12- to 18-month return on investment
-- following a successful pilot in a Willimantic, Conn., store. NCR, the first company to offer a wireless ESL system, is a leader in this industry with more than 150 installations in 11 countries.
"Business leaders today say, `show me the money,' before they make investment decisions," said Pete Bartolotta, vice president and general manager, NCR RealPrice. "And retailers are getting the message that NCR RealPrice quickly impacts their bottom line, as well as customer satisfaction. ESLs are becoming mainstream technology in the retailing industry."
