They gave attribution to two different named sources, not that the time was important. I think it was just as important that Clinton lied about the fact that the meeting took place and that it took place prior to Bush's official meeting. The main point of both stories was the involvement of those with little responsibility, hence little at risk, trying to interfere with sensitive relations between heads of state. Both Clinton and Carter have acted inappropriately. This, after Clinton went around bashing Arafat after the failed Camp David meetings. From all objective accounts I've read, that offer was a non-starter from the beginning.
