CHELMSFORD, Mass.--After seven months of planning and antitrust review, Brooks Automation Inc. today announced completion of its acquisition of PRI Automation Inc. to form the industry's largest supplier of fab automation systems.

The transaction was completed in a tax-free swap of stock valued at $536 million, according to the Chelmsford-based company.

Officials said the new merged company--now called Brooks-PRI Automation Inc.--had combined revenues of $650 million in the fiscal 2001 year, which ended Sept. 30. Books-PRI claims it is now roughly double the size of its nearest competitor in fab automation systems and the world's 11th largest semiconductor capital equipment supplier, based on information released last month by Dataquest Inc.

"Through the acquisition of PRI, Brooks gains key technologies in the areas of atmospheric robotics, reticle automation, factory software and fab infrastructure support to strengthen our leadership position in the markets that we already serve, as well as giving us an entry into the area of automated material handling systems," said Robert J. Therrien, president and CEO of Brooks-PRI.
