TAIPEI, Taiwan — An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale struck Taiwan on Wednesday but left its foundries largely untouched, according to early reports from officials.

The quake was centered on the northeast part of the island and dissipated to about a 3.0 by the time it reached the Hsinchu Science Park, home to Taiwan's semiconductor industry.

No injuries were reported. Only minor incidents of damage occurred. Shortly after the 11:46am temblor, spokesmen at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Co. said there was little to no effect on operations.

Earthquakes are common in Taiwan, and most affect the eastern side, which is mountainous and sparsely populated. This is the second earthquake to hit Taiwan in two months. On March 31, a 6.8 quake also rumbled through eastern Taiwan, but settled to a 4.0 in Hsinchu, in the west, and a 2.0 at the Tainan Science Park, in the south, where the foundries also have operations.

At that time, the foundries reported about a half-day loss in productivity.
