Compac's "revolutionary new re-writable CD_ROM" sounds like it is
their PD-CD, which combines a 4x CD-ROM with a PD drive (which, like
the CD-ROM, holds 650 MB). The PD is rewritable by using the laser
in a high/low power setting. Note that the PD disk is only readable
in a PD drive, not any other CD-ROM drive. I don't know who makes
the PD drive, but 3M makes the media. I wouldn't be surprised if
Matsushita/Panasonic made the drive.

I don't think this is competition for either Zip or Jaz (or maybe
its bad competition for either). Certainly if all you were getting
a Jaz drive for was to back up your 2 GB hard drive, then the combo
CD-PD drive makes as much sense. But if you need or desire the speed
that Jaz offers over PD technology, then Jaz is the answer. More
importantly, if you need to share your data with someone who doesn't
have a Compaq, then you want a Jaz (if your friend doesn't have a Jaz, the drive itself is portable enough to take along).

Compaq seems to be hell bent on selling boxes with dual function drives. First the PD-CD (which is available - I have one) and then
the LS-120, which may or may not be ready for primetime.
