"A Political Story, Not A National Security Story"
GOP fax machines and file servers all over Washington are on Code Puce today, what with the terrorist threat of actual truth possibly penetrating the botoxed frontal cortexes of the celebcorp's collective brain. From the looks of things, Karl Rove can begin to rest easy.
The day started off badly with the unctuous Ari pretending that there is a substantial difference between whether the administration has a duty to respond when it knows there are terrorist threats to hundreds of innocent people traveling on airplanes and whether they have a duty to respond when there is a threat to hundreds of innocent people traveling on airplanes AND working in buildings.
It's simply apples and oranges to compare the two entirely different scenarios, according to Ari. Yeah, they'd heard there were hijackings planned but hijackings are so pre- 9/11. It's the building thing that REALLY made them step back and go "woah, dude." You see, "it was a new type of attack that had not been foreseen." Plain old hijackings of American airliners just weren't worth getting all upset about. I mean, the pResident was ON VACATION.
The mediawhores, in a rare display of intellectual curiosity, asked more than once if maybe, since 9/11, the pResident might have mentioned that he'd had knowledge of impending hijackings in the US by Al Qaeda. "It's been 8 months and nobody in the administration has said a word about this," they said. Ari, in a predictable display of intellectual incoherence, repeatedly stated that the question was being asked with the benefit of hindsight.
That was 2001, you see. It's now 2002. It's later now. So you're cheating. Sure, we knew that they might hijack some planes, and we sent out a memo to a couple of federal agencies, we think. But turning the planes into missiles is what changes everything, so it's hindsight. There really was no need to mention the specifics of the warnings after 9/11. If we had, the American people might think that His Highness...er the pResident didn't do all he could to prevent terrorists hijacking planes and turning them into missiles. But, that's not true. He didn't know about the missile part, only the hijacking part. Can we move along, now?
The 8th grade pep squad, aka the Washington presscorp, seemed a little bit confused. Why was Ari being so wierd?
But, not to worry. Herr Rove has everything under control. First, CNN's Jonathan "militiamen are cool dudes" Karl began reporting that the Democrats are coming out "strongly" against Bush on this. "A partisan battle is taking shape." He quotes the GOP head of the House Intelligence committee as saying some incomprehensible gobbldygook that seems to imply that the Democrats are smearing Bush. He pledges to find out who leaked this information. Junior is quoted widely as saying to GOP Senators that "there's a whiff of politics in the air." Drudge dropped his "Bush Knew" headline and started hawking a terrorist story from 1998.
As with Enron being a "business" story and not a "political story, this is now a "political" story and not a "national security" story.
(Faux pretty much ran documentary footage of Ronald Reagan all morning. That's the cable TV equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and singling LA-LA-LA-LA-LA)
Meanwhile, it's Thursday and the invitations to week-end social events are starting to come in. By Monday, the whores will have their ducks in a row and the true story, with all it's ugly implications, will finally come out.
